Description
This photo is of the female Northern Cardinal and was taken recently in November. The bush she is on is my burning bush and she just happened to pop out of the middle of it. They are known to make their nest there in past years, also. She was definitely eating some of the bright red berries that this bush produces. The Northern Cardinal is one of our most popular birds in the United States with seven states choosing it as their state bird. The male is bright red , but the female is more light browns/gray with a little red in her crest. They are about 1.5 oz. as adults, and can get 9.3 inches long. Cardinals are found in southeast Canada, the whole eastern half of the U.S. and into Mexico. They have a nice whistling song and stay for our winters here in Ohio. The female lays 3-4 eggs and can have 2-3 broods a year which both male and female feed. Beautiful birds. Female Cardinal on Burning Bush.
