Description
I was excited to find this Trumpeter Swan family in a smaller lake near the shores of Lake Erie in Ohio. They are the largest and heaviest waterfowl in North America. Trumpeter Swans or Cygnus Buccinator can be 3 feet in length, up to 4 feet high, and have a wingspan of 6 to 8 feet. In the 1930s they were near extinction in North America but with the help of conservation groups have made a great comeback. They are known to live up to 20 years in the wild, but there was one recorded to live 35 years in a refuge. My favorite part of seeing them in their graceful looks and the loud honking they make to communicate. They are amazing parents and this pair was very watchful of their cygnet.
They were a beautiful trio and a joy to see. Trumpeter Swan Trio.
